"What are the risks?" I don't know about you guys but taking a pill which can make me slimmer is just a little too good to be true, in my opinion. I guess I am very old fashion in that I do believe in a holistic approach which is to tackle both diet and exercise. By that I mean eat healthy diet and then include exercise in your daily lifestyle. Easier said than done, right? But it really isn't and I will share my own techniques in getting fit. No short cuts!

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has a history of issuing warnings about weight-loss tablets that pose a potential health threat. Food and Drug Administration does not check the safety of the over-the-counter pills before they hit the market as they do not fall in the same category as prescribed medications. Manufacturers of these diet pills only needs to show limited proof of safety and effectiveness. Only when a product goes on sale that the FDA can monitor its safety and issue bans or recalls of products that turn out to be dangerous.

More often that not, diet pill manufacturers make big claims about the benefits of their products when there are not much evidence to back those claims.

During 2008 and 2009, FDA issued warnings about 69 weight-loss products that were on the market. Many of the products on the list contained sibutramine, which is a controlled substance that can cause high blood pressure, seizures, rapid heartbeat, palpitations, heart attack or stroke.

Diet pills can also be very expensive. If you are not careful you could find yourself spending lots of money on products that may not be effective and may be harmful to you. So if you really want to lose weight then it would be best to set your money aside to buy healthy food and maybe even a gym membership.
 



My Experiences

I have battle with my weight since early teens. Back then nobody really told me that by eating way too much food and not exercising could lead to a very unhealthy lifestyle and health problems. My mother loved to cook and I loved to eat. I don't blame anyone for my weight gain and I don't even blame myself for it. For me it was the best years of my life, I can remember being very happy with life. Unlike other people who have been through some sort of trauma in their lives, I didn't. I was a happy teen and I was very much accepted by my peers. Didn't experience being call names due to my size. In short I really didn't have any excuse for being so over weight. Then one summer day it hit me. My friends in I were all racing down to the beach and I swear I felt my heart stopped. I was so out of breath I thought I was going to die! That was a break through for me.

For me it was simple. I went back to the very basic, first I looked at all the food I was eating. Then I actually read the health information in each of them and looked at how much sugar are inside these foods. Those with very high sugar content I cut out of my diet but not completely. I decided to keep some because I read in an article that it could cause yo-yo effect if you completely deprive yourself with them. Which means that if I completely cut out everything I used to love, I would eventually crave for those things and could possibly go back to my old habits and gain more weigth and so I smartened up. I still ate chocolates and cakes but in moderation.

Changing my eating habits was not easy. I have gotten so use to the taste of high sugar and butter taste that most food did not taste the same. I had to learn all over again what healthy food taste like. Just as simple as eating an apple, to me it used to taste so bland but I can actually taste and enjoy its natural sweetness.

Then ofcourse I didn't stop with just the food. I've decided to start an active life. I didn't rush to the gym to sign up, I decided to take it one step at a time, baby steps. Walking is the most natural thing people can do with not much effort needed so everyday I've disciplined myself to walk. I started with 30 minutes of walking then I increase this as I become stronger. Then when I felt that I could handle a bit of jogging, I slowly ease myself into this new routine and then finally joining the gym to help me build muscles.

With healthy diet and exercise combination I started seeing results. But just like the Pantene ad says "It didn't happen over night but it did happen." I could not be happier, I am now enjoying my life even more than I preciously have. I am so glad and proud of myself for pushing myself to do something about my weight. I'm now in my late 20's and have maintained a healthy weight of 60 kgs as opposed to 97 kgs. I still continue to eat healthy food and exercise everyday. I am so use to this lifestyle now that it is now my norm.

We get motivated differently all you have to do is find that one thing that makes you want to lose weight for yourself and not anyone else. It won't work otherwise. I just hope that someone gets inspired to give it a go.
